Description
In Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Sescau poster, an orange and pink-robed woman appears at the left while the photographer bends beneath a cloth at the right. Text and yellow-green areas join the two figures in a strongly differentiated printed design. An image-maker’s trade becomes visible through a scene that connects a potential sitter to the practical activity of photography.
Made in 1894, the lithograph is printed in four colors on machine-made wove paper. Toulouse-Lautrec’s work places Sescau within a medium distinct from his photographic practice, allowing one visual trade to be approached through another artist’s invention. The print’s interest lies in that relationship as well as its particular human subject. A familiar profession acquires a public presence, inviting attention to the person associated with it rather than only the objects he produces.
