Description
The Promenade by Albrecht Dürer shows a fashionably dressed couple walking closely together through a landscape. The young man turns toward his companion, his feathered hat and sword adding a flourish to the encounter. The woman’s long gown falls in sharply described folds, and a slender tree divides the foreground from the small figure partly concealed behind it.
Engraved around 1498, the image invites more than a passing glance. The intimacy of the couple contrasts with the unsettling presence behind the tree, giving an apparently pleasant outing a note of unease. Dürer’s fine lines make clothing, plants and distant buildings equally engaging, balancing the elegance of the central figures with the scene’s quieter suggestion of vulnerability.
