Description
Edvard Munch’s The Scream turns a landscape into an image of intense emotion. A figure stands with hands raised to its head beneath a sky of sweeping red and orange bands. The curving water and hills seem to carry that agitation across the scene, while the straight railing pulls the eye toward two distant figures. Color and line make the whole setting feel caught in the same unsettling rhythm.
This is the 1893 version held by Norway’s National Museum. Munch gives the central figure few individual features, allowing its alarm to feel widely recognizable. The work’s lasting force lies in that meeting of a private sensation and a world that seems to echo it.
