Description

In Ichikawa Yaozō II as Soga no Gorō, Katsukawa Shunshō gives the actor a broad, emphatic stance before an architectural screen. Pale patterned clothing spreads across the lower body, punctuated by red accents and blades at the side. The costume’s strong shapes make the role visibly theatrical, while the planted feet give the figure a firm physical presence.

Dated to the second month of 1773, the ink-and-color woodblock print offers a durable image of an appearance originally encountered on stage. Its title provides the role without requiring the viewer to reconstruct the entire drama. Shunshō’s work invites attention to how a familiar actor becomes another person in performance. The two names remain linked, giving the portrait both an individual identity and a place within a larger theatrical tradition.
