Description
Jean-François Millet’s The Sower turns the casting of seed into a forceful, expansive gesture. The worker strides across a ploughed field, his extended arm opening the silhouette against the land. Smaller figures on the distant rise establish the scale of the landscape, but the sower’s movement dominates the image, making one moment stand for an action repeated across the field.
The lithographic design dates to 1851; this particular impression was printed in 1879 or later, after Millet’s death. Dark masses and the broad reach of the figure give the scene its power without elaborate detail. The image joins bodily effort to the prospect of future growth, finding a monumental rhythm in work that begins with the smallest, most ordinary materials.
