Description
The Spinner depicts a woman seated at a spinning wheel on the right of a woodcut engraved by Jacques-Adrien Lavieille after Jean-François Millet. A high ladder-backed chair rises at the left, with a dark opening behind the figure. The gathered furnishings make a modest interior feel closely inhabited, concentrating the scene around the seated worker and her familiar equipment.
Dated 1853, The Spinner brings Millet’s design into a printed form through Lavieille’s engraving. The woodcut medium gives the scene a direct relationship between dark shapes and the surrounding paper. Its interest lies in the close encounter with a person occupied, where making something useful becomes a sustained part of daily life. The work allows that routine to remain visible without reducing the woman to a symbol or supplying an elaborate story around her.
