Description
The Stoning of St. Stephen brings the violence of a biblical martyrdom into a tightly crowded scene. In Rembrandt’s etching of 1635, Stephen is surrounded by attackers whose raised arms and gathering bodies leave him little space. The action converges on the saint, making the encounter feel immediate and overwhelming. His vulnerability gives the image its emotional center, while the surrounding figures turn the composition into a study of collective force.
