Description
Segawa Kikunojō III portrays an elegant woman in a flowing gold-orange robe whose hem trails before a low wave-patterned wall. The long garment gives the upright figure a graceful continuity with the decorative setting. Katsukawa Shunshō joins a named actor to a female character, allowing costume and interior detail to give the portrayal a particular visual presence.
The color woodblock print dates to around 1779 and uses ink and color on paper. Its theatrical subject becomes a lasting encounter outside the duration of performance, where figure and room can be regarded together. The work’s appeal lies in that specific relationship, allowing the decorative setting to contribute to the image without requiring an invented narrative to explain the character’s presence.
