Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V bends forward in yellow-green and pale robes, holding a hand near his face. Long objects cross near the lower left while inscription occupies the upper right, giving the narrow sheet a varied arrangement around the actor. Katsukawa Shunshō preserves a named performer without forcing a dramatic role onto the documented identity.
The color woodblock print dates to around 1773 and uses ink and color on paper. It carries the performer’s presence into a lasting visual form beyond the duration of a stage event. The work invites attention to that continuing encounter, where a named individual associated with theater can be regarded closely without requiring every circumstance of his portrayal to be settled in advance.
