Description

The Titan’s Goblet sets an enormous chalice on a rocky height above a desolate valley. A lake fills its broad bowl, with small buildings along the rim and a waterfall dropping toward the land below. Warm, darkened sky surrounds the upper vessel. Thomas Cole makes the impossible object feel substantial, allowing familiar landscape details to turn its extraordinary scale into an imagined world.

Painted in 1833 in oil on canvas, the work is an imaginative landscape rather than a record of a particular site. Its interest depends on the relationship between familiar forms and extraordinary scale: vessel, water and surrounding land remain recognizable even as their proportions become impossible. The image invites sustained looking because the central object behaves like a monument, a container and a setting at once.
