Description

The Tragedy by Pablo Picasso brings three barefoot figures together at the edge of the sea. A woman and a man turn inward with lowered heads, while a child reaches toward the adults. Although they stand close, their separate gestures create a powerful sense of emotional distance.

Painted in 1903, the work uses the cool blues associated with Picasso’s Blue Period to connect bodies, shore and sky. Dark contours give the figures a sculptural weight, and the broad horizontal bands of the background make their stillness more pronounced. The child’s small movement becomes especially affecting within this restrained arrangement.

The Tragedy is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Its title suggests sorrow without identifying a specific event, leaving the viewer to consider the dignity and isolation of the figures rather than a fully explained story.
