Description
Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s The Two Sisters on the Terrace brings two young figures into a bright setting of foliage and river light. The older figure’s vivid red hat and dark blue dress anchor the composition, while the younger child wears a flower-filled hat. A railing and loosely painted greenery connect the intimate foreground with the open landscape beyond.
Painted in 1881, the work is also known as Two Sisters (On the Terrace). Renoir balances carefully described faces with a surrounding world of lively, broken color. Flowers, fabrics, and leaves seem to share the same shimmering light, giving the portrait its affectionate and buoyant atmosphere.
