Description
The Universe Is Created gives Paul Gauguin’s woodcut an ambitious title within a compact horizontal scene. Overlapping head-like forms gather at the right, while a bird appears above and a pale fish-like creature occupies the lower area. Water and hill-like shapes connect these elements across the print. The image makes origins suggestive rather than sequential, offering an arrangement of living forms without explaining each one through a complete narrative.
Designed in 1893–94 for Noa Noa, or Fragrance, the work lets woodcut contribute a direct and irregular visual language. Cut lines can separate forms sharply while also filling them with changing textures. This gives the scene a sense of construction that is especially suited to its title. The image remains suggestive, asking the viewer to move between recognizable elements and a broader, less easily contained idea of creation.
