Description
In this engraving by Albrecht Dürer, Mary and Saint Anne stand together around the infant Christ, whose small body connects the two women across the center of the composition. Their heads incline toward him, and the gathered folds of their garments give the group a firm, balanced presence. Above, a heavenly figure appears within clouds, linking this intimate family encounter with a broader devotional vision.
The engraving presents kinship through the movement of hands and the attention of faces. The two adults form complementary shapes, while the child becomes the point where those shapes meet. Dark passages of fabric contrast with the lighter bodies and open ground, keeping the relationship legible within a compact space. The result is a sacred family image whose emotional warmth comes from shared care and the closeness of generations.
