Description
The Visitation by Albrecht Dürer places the greeting of Mary and Elizabeth at the edge of a richly observed landscape. The two women meet with an intimate embrace, while companions stand nearby and a building frames the gathering at the left. Beyond them, trees, a winding distance and high rocky forms carry the eye far from the foreground encounter.
Made in 1503–4 for The Life of the Virgin, the woodcut combines a moment of recognition with the pleasure of exploring a detailed setting. The women’s broad robes give their embrace a clear shape, while smaller figures and scattered landscape details keep the surrounding world alive. Sacred history unfolds here through a gesture that remains warmly and recognizably human.
