Description
The Waterfall by Henri Rousseau draws the eye into an imagined jungle of layered leaves, tall trees and a narrow cascade. Small figures appear among the plants, giving the abundant vegetation an imposing scale. Deep greens are punctuated by red foliage and a pale open sky. Painted in 1910, the work belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago’s collection.
Rousseau’s distinct leaf shapes and measured outlines give the forest an almost staged stillness. The scene feels less like a fleeting outdoor observation than a world assembled through imagination, with each plant contributing to its rhythm. Water and figures offer points of narrative interest, but the foliage remains the dominant presence, surrounding the viewer with an intricate pattern of growth.
