Description

Jean-François Millet’s The Wool Carder draws attention to a seated woman working in a dark rural interior. The carding tools meet around her hands and lap, giving the simple seated pose a precise purpose. A basket rests nearby, connecting the figure to the materials of her task, while the surrounding shadows keep the scene close and enclosed.

Created around 1855–56, the etching uses concentrated hatching to build the room’s depth and distinguish the worker from its darker recesses. The small movement of her hands becomes more compelling because so much of the composition remains settled. Millet makes the preparation of wool an absorbing subject in its own right, acknowledging the patient indoor labor that accompanies the more visible work of the fields.
