Description

Two Designs for Ewers explores contrasting ornamental vessels in a drawing after Polidoro da Caravaggio. The left ewer rises on a slender pedestal and has an elaborate curling handle, while the more rounded vessel at right carries a prominent mask-like detail. Pen and black ink work with grayish-brown wash to distinguish their outlines and give the decorative forms a sense of volume.

Placed together on the sheet, the designs encourage the viewer to compare proportion as well as ornament. A narrow support can make the upper body seem lighter, while a broader form concentrates attention on the vessel’s surface and projecting details. The drawing is dated broadly between 1600 and 1800, showing the transmission of Polidoro’s designs through another hand. It makes the design process tangible, presenting useful objects as opportunities for intricate, animated invention.
