Description

Two Women Sewing by Lamplight brings faces and hands into view around a central lamp in an extremely dark interior. Much of the room remains difficult to distinguish, making the shared activity depend on a restricted area of light. Millet allows that limited visibility to give the domestic scene its particular closeness rather than describing every surrounding object.

Made about 1853, the work is an etching from a zinc plate on thin laid paper backed with tissue, represented in its second and final state. Millet gives domestic labor the concentrated space of a graphic image rather than relegating it to background detail. Sewing can be approached through attention, companionship and the light needed for the task. The print preserves an ordinary interval of work, allowing shared activity to become a complete subject without requiring an invented story about the women.
