Description
Two young women watch plovers from a veranda in Katsukawa Shunshō’s print from Stylish Six Poetic Immortals. One woman sits lower beside the red veranda railing while another stands, looking toward a river landscape with distant birds above. The difference in level makes their shared attention gently varied, joining companionship to the broader world beyond the building.
Created around 1770, the nishiki-e print uses ink and color on paper. Its appeal lies in the relationship between the women, their vantage point and the object of their attention. A small act of watching becomes a meeting between companionship and the surrounding world. Shunshō allows poetry to enter through that ordinary encounter, giving the image interest without removing it from the familiar pleasure of sharing a view.
