Description
Two figures stand close in Kitagawa Utamaro’s fan-vendor scene, their coiffures and pale and checked garments creating distinct neighboring shapes. A fan bearing a picture appears low at the right. The familiar object gives the encounter a practical focus, linking outward appearance to the ordinary exchange through which such objects enter everyday life.
Made in the 1790s, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Utamaro allows an occupation to provide human interest without requiring a grand occasion. The work invites an encounter with the person behind a familiar transaction, giving commerce a place among the subjects of an intimate image. Its appeal lies in the attention paid to a modest activity, where something ordinarily passed by can acquire a distinctive presence through the act of looking.
