Description
Kitagawa Utamaro’s high-ranking courtesan appears close against a pale field, with long dark hair falling beside her face and clothing. A slim pipe extends between her mouth and hand, adding a narrow directional line to the broader forms of her pale and red floral robe. The restrained setting makes the gesture and contrasting surfaces especially prominent.
Dated 1794–1795, the ink-and-color woodblock print belongs to Five Shades of Ink in the Northern Quarter. The series identity places this portrait within a larger exploration of figures from the pleasure quarters, while the title specifies her rank as oiran. Utamaro gives the individual presence a quiet immediacy through close framing. Hair, patterned cloth and the lightly held pipe establish different visual rhythms within a composition centered on one person.
