Description
A mother bends over the sleepy infant she holds in Kitagawa Utamaro’s midnight scene. Her large coiffure occupies the upper left, while pale clothing with tan and red accents surrounds the child. The spare ground gives their close relationship particular emphasis, allowing the adult’s attention and the infant’s presence to carry the image together.
Made in 1790, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Utamaro gives the interval its own importance, treating a familiar experience of tending a child as a subject worthy of sustained attention. The nighttime identification lends the pair another degree of intimacy without requiring a grand event. Its appeal lies in that modest scale, where the shared passage toward sleep can make ordinary life feel personal, immediate and quietly engaging.
