Description
Yoyogiku of the Matsubaya stands beneath a blossoming tree in an ornate dark floral robe in Kitagawa Utamaro’s print. A smaller attendant and a parasol appear at the left. The courtesan’s elaborate clothing and the tree’s flowering branches bring different kinds of pattern into a shared setting, giving the named figure a vivid seasonal presence.
The woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Utamaro brings the individual figure into relationship with a setting whose interest extends beyond her alone. The subject’s appeal lies in the meeting of personal identity and the world around it. A familiar seasonal motif becomes part of a particular person’s outward presence, giving the image an intimate human center within a larger experience of beauty and change.
