Description
Venice, from the Porch of Madonna della Salute by J. M. W. Turner opens across a bright expanse of water toward boats, palaces and a distant campanile. The sweeping sky occupies much of the composition, bathing the city in a light that softens the boundary between architecture and atmosphere.
Gondolas and working boats bring activity to the foreground, where reflections break into green, blue and gold. Crisp accents of rigging and stonework emerge from the luminous haze, giving the scene both an intricate local character and a spacious, dreamlike calm.
