Description
Vincent van Gogh’s View of Arles, Flowering Orchards looks through a screen of tall trunks toward trees covered in pale blossom. Beyond the orchard, roofs and towers mark the edge of the town. Green grass, yellow touches, and softly colored flowers fill the intervening space, while dark branches give the foreground a strong rhythm.
The painting joins the intimacy of a spring orchard to a distant city view. Van Gogh lets the vertical trees interrupt the panorama, making the viewer look between and around them. The busy surface of strokes gives blossoms, bark, and ground their own textures, carrying a sense of growth throughout the landscape.
