Description

In Thomas Cole’s View of Florence, the city spreads in the warm light of sunset. Its cathedral dome rises above clustered rooftops, while the river and bridges carry the eye through the city. People and goats occupy the near overlook, setting the distant architecture against a more intimate foreground. The layered view combines the breadth of a panorama with small signs of ordinary life, so that the city feels inhabited rather than merely surveyed.

Cole painted View of Florence in 1837, developing a pencil sketch made during his Italian travels in 1831. Working later in his New York studio, he expanded the observation into an oil painting and added the foreground figures. The result preserves the attraction of an observed place while giving it a carefully balanced structure. Evening light connects city, valley and mountains in one expansive view.
