Description
Virgin and Child brings mother and infant together in a closely framed encounter. The Madonna inclines her head toward the child at the left, her gray-blue cloak lying over a red bodice. Their faces and the child’s body stand out against the darker setting, while an opening behind them offers a distant glimpse of architecture and landscape. The small outward view adds depth without disturbing the intimate foreground.
Painted around 1500 in oil on wood, the work is attributed to the circle of Leonardo da Vinci. That qualification preserves its relationship to Leonardo’s artistic world without claiming his own hand. The softened transitions between light and shadow connect the figures, and the child’s returning gaze gives the composition a quiet exchange of attention rather than a formal, distant presentation.
