Description
Caspar David Friedrich’s Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog places a solitary man on a rocky summit, facing a landscape largely hidden by mist. Dark peaks emerge from the pale cloud, while distant mountains fade toward the horizon. His back is turned to the viewer.
The upright figure provides a clear point of orientation within the uncertain view. The nearby rocks feel firm, but the distance remains open and indistinct. Friedrich makes the act of contemplating the landscape as important as the mountain scenery itself.
