Description

Watson and the Shark brings rescue and danger into a tightly connected marine scene. Men crowd the boat as they reach toward the naked swimmer below, while the dark shark approaches from the lower right. A harbor and other vessels recede beneath the golden sky. John Singleton Copley links the rescuers’ overlapping actions across the boat, turning an individual crisis into a shared effort suspended within the image.

Painted around 1778 in oil on canvas, this version is a rapid study associated with Copley’s successive treatments of the subject. It recalls Brook Watson’s encounter with a shark in Havana harbor in 1749, rather than an event contemporary with the painting. The smaller study preserves the composition’s dramatic structure while allowing its arrangement of figures, water and movement to remain visibly exploratory.
