Description
Rembrandt’s Woman Reading shows a woman in a cap turned in profile toward the left, her hands and book gathered low in the small arrangement. Rembrandt gives reading a concentrated human presence through the direction of the head and the closeness of the page. Brown ink and wash hold the figure lightly, allowing a familiar private activity to become absorbing without a richly furnished room around it.
The drawing combines pen lines with brushed wash, giving the face and clothing different degrees of definition. Its intimate scale makes the woman’s attention more important than an account of her surroundings. Rembrandt lets the act of reading organize the encounter, where a few selected marks establish person, book and posture while the quieter paper keeps them close to the viewer.
