Description
Wooded Region places small cottages within a landscape framed by substantial trees. The woodland occupies the nearer space at the right, while distant crags and mountains open the view toward the left. Settlement and wilderness share the composition without either fully claiming it. The scene gains its interest from these changing scales, inviting the eye to move from close foliage to buildings and then beyond them.
Johannes and Lucas van Doetecum made the etching and engraving after Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s design around 1555–56. Published by Hieronymus Cock, it belongs to The Large Landscapes. The combination of techniques supplies an intricate language of line for foliage, terrain and distance. The expansive composition encourages movement through the image, making the act of exploring a landscape as important as any small incident within it.
