Description
A young lady in waiting is the subject of this hanging scroll by Katsukawa Shunshō, bringing attention to a female figure identified through her place in a courtly or household world. The woman kneels or sits with her head bowed, pale blue-gray and white drapery gathered above a red lower garment. A broad field of quiet silk surrounds the small figure, giving the reserved posture an intimate weight through the contrast between person and open space.
The eighteenth-century painting was made in ink and color on silk, distinguishing it from Shunshō’s woodblock prints. The hanging-scroll format gives the represented person a sustained pictorial space rather than a scene divided among sheets. Its interest lies in the meeting of status and human presence, where the designation of service does not exhaust the figure’s identity. Shunshō makes that person available to close attention within the quieter world of painting.
