Description
An armored Macbeth stands at the left of Eugène Delacroix’s dark lithograph, facing witches gathered over a cauldron at the right. The opposing groups make Shakespeare’s dramatic consultation tangible through their placement. A familiar human figure encounters a more unsettling company, giving the scene’s exchange an atmosphere of uncertainty as well as a particular theatrical presence.
Made in 1825, the lithograph brings Shakespeare’s dramatic world into a close material encounter. Delacroix gives the consultation an atmosphere in which the wish to know and the uncertainty of what is offered remain closely connected. The scene’s interest lies in an exchange whose significance reaches beyond the immediate gathering. The opposing figures preserve that wider tension while allowing one represented moment to become the focus of a dark and concentrated image.
