Description
Fallen warriors and limbs occupy the lower parts of the drawing while a runaway horse rears at the upper right. Expressive ink lines surround a broad open center, giving the separated forms a shared space. Eugène Delacroix joins human vulnerability to an animal’s movement, allowing the contrast between bodies brought down and a horse in action to carry the scene’s drama.
The 1862 drawing uses pen and brown ink, giving the scene a direct graphic presence. Its subject brings several kinds of movement and stillness into relation without requiring the scale of a finished painting. The image’s interest lies in that concentrated encounter, where the named elements can carry a sense of disruption through their relationship rather than an elaborate account of the larger event around them.
