Description
Faust and Marguerite appear as dark standing figures in a town street, their meeting concentrated within the surrounding architecture. Eugène Delacroix brings Goethe’s episode of an unsuccessful advance into a particular human encounter. Faust offers to escort the young woman home, but she frees her arm and leaves, giving their differing responses a dramatic identity beyond a simple pairing of figures.
The lithograph dates to 1825–27 and belongs to Delacroix’s Faust illustrations. It gives a passage of speech and action a lasting visual form, concentrating the moment rather than retelling the whole drama. The work’s interest lies in that transformation, where the relationship between the pair can make the episode immediate while the printed image allows a slower attention than the brief exchange it represents.
