Description
Paul Gauguin’s Hail Mary (Ia Orana Maria) brings figures together in a tall, softly shaded composition. Dark contours and warm, muted tones give the scene a contemplative atmosphere, while the closely grouped forms create a sense of stillness and human connection. The drawing’s visible marks keep the artist’s hand present throughout the image.
This version, dated about 1893–95, is a drawing rather than Gauguin’s better-known painting of the same title. Made with charcoal, red chalk, and white pastel on paper, it offers a quieter, more intimate treatment of the subject. The original belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
