Description

In Ia Orana Maria, Gauguin places a haloed mother and child among lush vegetation, fruit and figures with hands joined in prayer. Strong outlines hold the figures within broad areas of red, green and gold.

Ia Orana Maria (Hail Mary) brings Christian imagery into a Tahitian setting. The still poses and saturated color lend the scene a ceremonial quality, while the inscription along the lower edge remains part of the composition. The work is by Paul Gauguin.
