Description

Men in broad-brimmed hats and seventeenth-century dress gather across Édouard Manet’s The Little Cavaliers, after a work then associated with Velázquez. Figures at the left and right frame a closer cluster in the middle. The pale etched lines let the eye move among their poses and clothing, giving a group scene an open rhythm rather than a single dominating portrait.

Made in 1861–62, the print combines etching, drypoint and bitten tone. Manet’s encounter with a Spanish subject becomes an exercise in his own graphic medium, where dress and grouping carry the visual interest. The work allows an earlier painted world to take a different material form through lines and areas of shade. Its appeal lies in the lively relationship between separate figures, making a historical gathering feel accessible through the artist’s attentive translation.
