Description

A cluster of cavaliers in hats and historical costume occupies this etched scene, with strong contrast concentrated toward the left foreground. Manet gives the grouped figures a shared space, allowing their different positions and clothing to establish the picture’s human rhythm. The work’s traditional title connects the composition with Velázquez rather than presenting it as an invented contemporary gathering.

The design dates to 1861–1862, while this final-state etching and drypoint on blue laid paper belongs to the Strölin edition of 1905. The title’s reference to Velázquez identifies Manet’s engagement with an earlier source, not Velázquez’s authorship of this printed sheet. The print brings historical costume and grouped figures into a newly worked graphic surface. Its appeal lies in that encounter across images, where an older composition receives another artist’s etched treatment.
