Description
Amedeo Modigliani’s Juan Gris shows the painter with his head tilted above a dark shirt and white collar. Warm skin stands against a muted green background, and the long face is reduced to clear, spare features. The inclined pose gives the portrait a thoughtful asymmetry.
Painted in 1915, the portrait combines individual likeness with the elongated forms characteristic of Modigliani’s work. The white collar creates a sharp hinge between face and clothing, while the curved outline of the head keeps the geometry from feeling rigid.
