Description

A cluster of horses charges down the racecourse of Édouard Manet’s The Races, with a rail nearby and spectators lining the rail at the right. Clouds open above the crowded event. The broad horizontal view lets speed and company share the image, bringing the racing action close while preserving the public gathering that gives it a larger social setting.

The lithographic design dates from 1865–72 and was published in 1884, after Manet’s death. Those dates distinguish the creation of the image from this later issue. Lithography gives the racing subject a direct graphic form, allowing marks and contrasts to carry movement without the full color of a painting. The work’s appeal lies in holding a passing event within a lasting image, bringing the energy of outdoor spectacle close enough to remain engaging beyond the instant of competition.
