Description
Eugène Delacroix gathers studies of heads and bodily details for Scenes from the Chios Massacres. Two expressive heads occupy the left, with larger limb or shoulder contours near the center and smaller feet at the right. Their differing scales make the page a field of separate observations, allowing faces and anatomy to be investigated without forming one completed scene.
Dated 1823, the graphite drawing belongs to the preparation of a larger historical subject. Delacroix explores the parts through which a figure can carry both physical weight and expression, letting each fragment contribute something distinct. The open arrangement preserves the activity of testing and refining, rather than hiding it beneath a final composition. The sheet invites a close look at how an ambitious image can develop through modest studies, joining human feeling with the practical search for form.
