Description

A solitary woman stands in wrapped Moroccan costume, bending an elbow with a hand near the chest. Pale pencil marks and spare paper give the figure a restrained setting. Eugène Delacroix makes clothing and the body’s quiet arrangement the center of this study, allowing a particular human presence to emerge without the surrounding activity of a larger scene.

Dating to around 1834, the drawing uses graphite and watercolor on wove paper. Drawn structure and painted color share the representation, bringing different means of observation into one surface. The work’s interest lies in that concentrated encounter with a human figure, where the standing pose and identified costume provide a focus without requiring a dramatic event or an invented biography to give the subject meaning.
