Description
A helmet occupies the center of Armorial Trophy, a drawing after Polidoro da Caravaggio, with swords, shields and other pieces spreading outward around it. The objects form a relief-like arrangement beneath an architectural lintel, while the curved shape below helps contain their display. Brown wash gives the design a modeled presence, making its ornamental structure feel substantial without a living figure inside it.
The drawing combines brown ink and wash with touches of white over graphite, giving the objects both contours and modeled accents. Made sometime between 1600 and 1800, it follows an earlier design associated with Polidoro rather than belonging to his own lifetime. That distinction allows the work to be approached as a later interpretation. Its appeal lies in the arrangement of separate pieces into a coherent whole, where the maker’s handling gives ornamental order to a collection of complex forms.
