Description
Vessels and armor form a balanced ornamental design in this drawing after Polidoro da Caravaggio, with two ornate vessels flanking a central armored form. A helmet and draped lower shapes reinforce the middle axis, while a sword cuts diagonally through the more balanced arrangement. The pale surrounding paper keeps attention on the ornamental structure, making separate objects feel connected through their outlines rather than a fully described architectural setting.
The visible side of the sixteenth-century sheet uses pen and brown ink over earlier drawn traces. That layered construction allows the design to retain something of its working character, with the maker refining an arrangement associated with Polidoro through another hand. The drawing offers a close encounter with ornamental thinking, where outlines establish both individual objects and their shared pattern. A two-figure sketch on the reverse belongs to the other side, separate from the design displayed here.
