Description
Portrait of Guillaumin with a Hanging Man shows a seated, hatted figure with his hands crossed near his knees. The substantial portrait occupies most of the sheet, while a much smaller hanging silhouette appears in the upper-left margin. Paul Cézanne joins the individual’s physical presence with that unsettling secondary motif, giving the print a relationship between principal image and marginal detail that remains deliberately unusual.
The design dates to 1873 and was made in etching and drypoint. This impression is catalogued as a restrike of the second state, a distinction between the original printmaking work and its later printing. The use of two related techniques gives drawn marks a range of qualities, allowing the composition’s separate passages to remain connected by the textured surface of the printed image.
