Description
In Bathers, Paul Cézanne places a small group of figures in a wooded clearing. A standing man faces away from the viewer, while another raises his arms and others sit or bend nearby. Blue and green patches connect the bodies with the surrounding trees.
The differing poses create a compact rhythm across the canvas. Strong outlines and block-like strokes give the figures weight, while the landscape remains loosely described. Cézanne treats the gathering as an arrangement of forms, with each body helping to establish the space around the others.
