Description
In Landscape with Three Gabled Cottages beside a Road, low roofs stretch across the left and center, with a tall, leafy tree filling the upper right. A road curves through the foreground toward the buildings, connecting the viewer’s position with the inhabited ground beyond. The tree’s spreading form gives the modest roofs a larger natural setting, while the route through the scene adds an easy sense of movement.
Rembrandt made Landscape with Three Gabled Cottages beside a Road in 1650 using etching and drypoint. This impression belongs to the third of three states. The work draws its interest from familiar elements placed in a persuasive relation: road, dwelling and tree. Changes of height and direction keep the setting lively, allowing an ordinary rural view to reward close and patient looking.
