Description
In The Flight into Egypt: Crossing a Brook, Rembrandt brings the Holy Family beneath a dark woodland canopy. Mary sits on the donkey near the center facing forward, while Joseph stands at the right. A lighter area around her head contrasts with the surrounding growth, keeping the small traveling group clear within its enclosed landscape setting.
Dated 1654, the print combines etching, engraving and drypoint. Rembrandt gives the journey a lasting graphic form, preserving one stage of travel rather than the whole story. The brook’s place within the title connects the people with their surroundings, making terrain part of the event instead of merely a backdrop. The image can be approached through that relation between movement and setting, where a modest act of crossing becomes a complete pictorial subject.
